The Bulk Scan Import tab appears under the ATO SmartDocs menu. This feature allows you to drag either a single or multiple scanned PDF documents to either split them into separate documents or Optical Character Recognition (OCR)‑scan them before splitting.
NOTE: There is a 30MB size limit for the documents you can scan.
Watch the video to learn how to use this feature or follow the steps below.
Single documents
Drag your scanned PDF document into the upload field where it says – Drop your PDF document here –.
If the PDF contains multiple pages, select how many pages to split. Otherwise, leave the default.
If all the documents have the same name, select the Document Profile and the Financial Year you want applied.
If the documents do not share the same name, leave the Document Profile blank and select the applicable Financial Year.
If your scanner already created OCR text in the PDF select Skip OCR, otherwise leave the Skip OCR unticked.
Click Import to SmartDoc.
A progress bar appears. When it reaches 100%, close the popup, select the Documents tab and you will see the imported scanned document ready for processing.
Multiple documents
If you have scanned multiple documents into a single PDF, drag the PDF into the upload field as above.
Change the Split page every value to reflect whether each document is one page or multiple pages.
If your scanner already created OCR text in the PDF, drag the PDF in, set the number of pages per document and select Skip OCR.
Once the progress bar reaches 100%, close the popup and open the Documents tab to see each document split and ready for processing.
If all documents share the same name, you can select the Document Profile and the Financial Year.
Click Import to SmartDoc, or leave Document Profile blank and select only the Financial Year.
Note: All documents in a multi‑document PDF must have the same number of pages, such as all single‑page documents or all double‑page documents.
OCR text identification must be scanned at 300 dpi or higher.
IMPORTANT: If you stamp or write on a document before scanning, ensure markings are in a blank section so the OCR process is not affected.
You may need to adjust Document Identifiers if OCR results require fine‑tuning.
Ensure your scanned document size is not too large, as oversized files may prevent clients from viewing or downloading them on mobile or desktop devices.
