Configuration – SMS

Updated over 2 months ago

The SMS tab contains all configuration settings for text messages sent from iPracticeHub.

SMS provider - Intelli Messaging

ATO SmartDocs uses IntelliSMS as the provider to send the 2FA SMS messages to your clients. See https://app.intellisms.com.au/

New customers receive 100 free SMS credits when they activate an account.

SMS credit bundles:

  • 1,000 SMS credits – $0.080 each

  • 2,000 SMS credits – $0.080 each

  • 3,000 SMS credits – $0.080 each

  • 5,000 SMS credits – $0.080 each

Messages do not expire, and there is no minimum monthly spend or account fees.
1 SMS credit = 160 characters.

You can add an Alpha Source (up to 11 characters, no spaces) so the practice name appears instead of a number.

Alternatively, for a monthly fee, you can allocate a static mobile number that allows reply messages. These replies can forward to a nominated email address.

You cannot use an Alpha Source and static mobile number together.

Overseas messaging

SMS delivery to Australian numbers overseas

If your client has an Australian mobile number and is overseas:

  • If international roaming is enabled, the SMS is delivered.

  • If roaming is disabled, the message cannot be delivered.

Australian carriers typically attempt delivery for 48–72 hours before cancelling undelivered messages.

SMS to United States of America mobile numbers

The USA telecommunication carriers do not allow SMS messages to be sent to USA mobile numbers. Because of these regulations, you cannot send SMS messages to the USA through the standard service.

If you need to send SMS messages to clients in the USA for 2-factor authentication to access their documents through the Vault, then you will need to advise your client that they will need to change their access method for the Vault from SMS to Authenticator App.

SMS to United Arab Emirates (UAE) mobile numbers

To send SMS messages to the UAE, you must complete a mandatory sender registration.

You must provide the following documents:

  1. A NOC filled in, signed, and stamped on your company letterhead.

  2. A Certificate of Incorporation (COI).

  3. A Brand Certificate, required when the Sender ID differs from the company name. This must come from the Chamber of Commerce or Ministry of Economy.

  4. A Sender ID Authorization Letter for promotional traffic, signed by the end user.

Notes:

  • There is a recurring monthly charge per international Sender ID (applies to all new and existing IDs).

  • There is also a one‑time fee per new international Sender ID

You must contact IntelliSMS to complete this setup and for pricing on the international Sender ID.

Alternative for countries where SMS cannot be received

If clients cannot receive SMS codes due to local restrictions and use the Vault, you can recommend and assist them in setting up an Authenticator App instead of receiving the access code by SMS.

See 2FA access via Authenticator for instructions.

International roaming

Australian mobile numbers with international roaming enabled continue to receive SMS messages while travelling in the USA or UAE. If international roaming is disabled, delivery is not possible.

DFAT‑restricted countries

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs blocks SMS delivery to certain countries.
See the DFAT Sanctions List of Countries:
see https://www.dfat.gov.au/international-relations/security/sanctions/

Entering international mobile numbers

When you enter an international mobile number, always include the +CountryCode, for example +64.

SmartDocs automatically applies international formatting rules to ensure successful delivery.

Low credit alert

A low‑credit email alert triggers when your balance falls below 10% of purchased credits. Ensure someone monitors the nominated account email. Contact IntelliSMS directly or log in to your account to top up.

When an error message appears

If a red warning message appears about insufficient credit, contact IntelliSMS directly or log in to your account to top up. You may like to consider setting up a direct debit to ensure SMS credits are topped up automatically when they fall below a certain balance.
